Frequently Asked Questions

What to Expect When You Start Counseling

Q: What can I expect from my first appointment with a therapist?

A: Before we meet we will ask you to fill out intake paperwork through our online portal in SimplePractice. When we first meet your therapist may ask additional questions about your history and what is currently going on for you. Your therapist will share their style and therapy modalities to start to create a plan that fits your goals. During this time you and your therapist can also discuss frequency of meetings, billing and insurance, or any other questions you might have.

Q: Can I expect to feel better right away?

A: Many people report immediate relief after knowing that support is available and that there is hope. However, for some people things feel like they get worse before they get better. This can happen because in therapy we want to identify what has been causing you distress and it can feel overwhelming to confront these issues at first.

Q: Does what we talk about in therapy remain confidential?

A: Information shared in therapy is protected by federal and state laws. However there are limits to this confidentiality which include if you are a risk of harming or hurting yourself or others.
